My back hurts. Make it feel better, interwebs.

It’s a rough year for second basemen in my fantasy leagues.

Baltimore’s Brian Roberts, my second baseman from last year’s team and currently on two of my rosters, went on the DL Monday with a strained abdominal muscle and a herniated disk that’s plagued him since spring training. He joins Ian Kinsler, the Rangers’ second baseman, who started the season on the DL with a sprained ankle.

Here’s the question with early-season DL players: do you wait it out and hope they return in productive form, or cut your losses and try to pick up someone else?

With Kinsler, the decision was easy. He’s quite valuable, and his injury isn’t major and probably won’t be chronic. I’ll wait for his return and hope that my replacement, Scott Sizemore, is as promising as I think he is. But Roberts is a bigger question. His spring hasn’t been outstanding (.143 BA), and his injury–at least the herniated disk–may nag him for a while. Roberts will probably be on the DL for more than 15 days. Since my teams are struggling right now (oh yeah, second to last in every league I’m in right now ) I need someone who can contribute in the meantime.

Luckily, I was able to pick up the Phillies’ Placido Polanco to fill in for Roberts in one league–amazing that he was even available since he’s hitting .484. If he continues to perform in the way he has, I might not need to worry about Roberts at all. But my other league has little available in terms of free agents, so I have to decide whether or not to seek a trade for a better second baseman, a possibly futile endeavor that may not help me in the short term anyway.

The bright side to this terrible ethical dilemma? My teams performed so dismally last week that there’s nowhere to go but up. In the meantime, send healing thoughts towards Baltimore. I think Roberts is going to need them.
