The ESPY awards bring together athletes from all walks of sport, to celebrate the accomplishments of the past year. It’s not often we get to see such a wide variety of sports stars together in one place and outside of their uniforms. The ESPYs have become as much of a fashion spectacle as they are an awards show, as our favorite jocks compete to showcase their sartorial talent. A Glam Slam has highlighted some of the best and worst ensembles at this year’s “Oscars for Sports.”

New York Knicks power forward and male style icon, Amar’e Stoudemire, spoke with E! News on the ESPYs red carpet and offered his very own fashion opinions. We’ve included that within the commentary below. Check it out:

Serena Williams always turns heads with her on and off court style selections and the ESPYs were no different. Heads were turning in every which direction when she hit the red carpet in a bright pink minidress from Rachel Roy, which featured a plunging neckline and figure-hugging fit. Serena topped off the look with a gold statement necklace and sky-high, glittery Christian Louboutin pumps.

Serena is used to garnering all of the fashion attention but she couldn’t steal the show this time around. Instead, she shared the spotlight with San Francisco Giants pitcher, Brian Wilson. It has been impossible to focus on anything other than “The Beard” as of late. That is until Wilson hit the red carpet in this spandex suit which was half tuxedo and half penguin in design. Leaving no detailed unturned, he accessorized with white gloves, a cane and high top sneakers. Amare’s take: “We [guys] don’t wear spandex on the red carpet. But I’ve got to give it to him. He can pull it off.”

For athletes, the clothes are important but it’s the accessories that can really define their style. Several stars wore designer shades and others were dripping in diamonds, but the item that received the most attention was Eric Maynor’s footwear. The Oklahoma City Thunder point guard kept his suit simple, which allowed for his studded Louboutin shoes to stand out even more.

Tyson Chandler took a page out of the Dhani Jones handbook. Jones, an NFL linebacker and bow tie aficionado, has helped the accessory to make a comeback especially among fellow sports stars. It appears as though Chandler is his latest student. Though their ensembles are totally different, both guys look cool in their bow tie fashions.

The NFL draft was proof that chic glasses are a huge trend for male athletes right now. Russell Westbrook and Cam Newton both rocked statement spectacles on the red carpet, to compliment their dapper duds.

Maria Sharapova was the night’s “MVD” (most valuable dresser). Her stunning Alexander McQueen minidress with gold embellishments around the waist and neck, showed off the tennis beauty’s long, lean legs and toned arms. An elegant updo and gold accessories were the perfect finish touches. And rumor has it Sharapova actually shortened the dress herself. Amar’es take: “That is talent. And you can’t really flirt with the Alexander McQueen gear but she was able to pull it off.

Two other female athletes who certainly shined on the red carpet were both Danika Patrick and Lindsey Vonn. Danika paired a one-shoulder black mini from Vivenne Westwood with Casadei pumps and green Adeler drop earrings for a look that was both sexy and sophisticated. Amar’es take: “The black dress is phenomenal, it fits her perfectly.” Vonn’s embellished, sequin mini was fun and flirty and showed off her fantastic physique.

Side by side, these looks couldn’t be more opposite. Laila Ali looked sweet and demure in a lovely lace dress which showed off her amazing post-baby body. Amar’es take: “The dress fits her perfectly. And she’s the daughter of the great Muhammad Ali so that’s two thumbs up for me.” Lolo Jones oozed sex appeal in a barely there backless black dress with chain detailing.

Unfortunately not all of the ladies scored with their fashion choices. Triathlete Hannah Cortett’s bridal-inspired gown would be better suited for the Oscars of Hollywood. Lisa Leslie’s navy one-shoulder mini failed to flatter her figure.

The usually well-dressed Evan Longoria totally missed the mark with this ESPYs outfit. The only thing missing is a cigar pipe in his mouth. And it seems we can’t get through a red carpet lately without seeing an athlete in a Pee-Wee Herman-inspired fashion. While we like the white piping on the suit, a neutral shirt and tie would have been less distracting than the red.

Both Aaron Rogers and Matt Kemp demonstrated effortless style. They looked comfortable and cool in their dark suits and could easily be mistaken for Hollywood leading men.

He’s shared his thoughts on everyone else, but how did Amar’es red carpet style rate at this year’s ESPYs? The Knicks star chose a black Calvin Clien suit, gold chain necklace and vintage Versace shades. The unique mix of a dressy, sleek suit and a casual black tee makes this one a winner.
