Today at London’s Design Museum, PUMA unveiled new soccer uniforms for the 10 teams in Africa that the company sponsors. It was a collaborative effort between the sportswear brand and a variety of artists from the Creative African Network (CAN). Ten artists, including Barthélémy Toguo of Cameroon, Zineb Zedira of Algeria and Godfried Donker of Ghana, were each commissioned to design a kit inspired by the country’s heritage, culture and traditions. The PUMA partnered African national teams represented include Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Namibia, Senegal,Togo, Gabon, Burkina Faso and South Africa.

“PUMA has been at the forefront of integrating the two disparate worlds of sport and art, and today through a celebration of football, art, colour and culture, we have shown to the world how these two spheres can be uniquely combined,” said Franz Koch, CEO of PUMA SE.

From a design standpoint, the jerseys feature a snug fit meant to prevent grabbing from opposing players. Each team’s uniforms also include a unique background image, with designs ranging from the face of a lion to a graphic with stars. The fabric features PUMA’s U.S.P Moisture Management technology, which benefits body performance by dragging moisture away from the body, enhancing air flow and keeping the body at the ultimate performance temperature.

To compliment the partnership, there will be a month-long exhibition at the Design Museum, London that showcases the artists’ design inspirations. The month-long exhibition, titled Interpretations of Africa: Football, Art and Design, will celebrate PUMA’s inspired new kit designs.

Keep an eye out for the new PUMA kits during the 2012 Orange Africa Cup of Nations
