Though the 2012 Olympic Games are more than eight months away, we’ve already been treated to a fashion preview from the Canadian team. And designers like Stella McCartney (Great Britain), Cedella Marley (Jamaica) and Polo Ralph Lauren (USA) are among those who are currently working to create signature styles for their countries. But the athletes won’t be the only ones on display when it comes time for the London Games. More than 70,000 volunteers, 6,000 London 2012 staff and 4,500 technical officials will have uniforms of their own.

The official Games Maker uniforms for next summer were created by a London 2012 and adidas design team to reflect the heritage and culture of Great Britain. According to the release, “They were fashioned with the historic Grenadier Guards uniform look in mind incorporating the British Sporting heritage as seen at the London 1948 Games, Wimbledon Tennis and Henley Regatta but with an innovative twist.”

Similar to the design process for the competitors, the uniforms needed to be functional and aesthetically pleasing, while still paying homage to the country. “Next to the athletes themselves, Technical Officials will be at the heart of the action next summer and we have worked with our partners adidas and Next to create uniforms which are practical and stylish. With our long heritage in the Olympics having outfitted athletes and federations since 1928 we wanted to include just as many technologies in the Games Maker uniforms as we do for our athletes,” said adidas Global VP of Olympic sports, Simon Cartwright.

A bold purple and red colorway was used to allow volunteers to stand out throughout the Games. Jackets feature a stand-up collar and metal buttons around the wrist. The 4,500 technical officials at the Games will wear either a formal or a casual uniform, depending on their sport. The casual outfit is a blue version of the general Games Maker uniforms. Leaving no detailed unturned, the formal attire for the technical officials features special touches such as engraved buttons with Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and embroidered collars featuring the London skyline.
