The fashion world continues to embrace geek-inspired styles and pro ballers are at the forefront of the trend. Players have added a nerdy sensibilty to couture fashions resulting in ensembles that are often described as “geek chic.” Kevin Durant elevated a school backpack with safety straps from a geeky accessory to a buzzed about sartorial statement. Dwyane Wade’s signature thick-rimmed specs have made their way onto the eyes of many of the game’s biggest stars. Current clothing styles have players channeling their inner geek without compromising on their swagger.
Grantland’s Wesley Morris recently took a look at this style evolution in “The Rise of the NBA Nerd.” Off-court attire was once characterized by loose fitting sweaters and pants, leather jackets and other fashions inspired by the hip-hop culture. But the league’s dress code has resulted in style upgrades in recent years. Today’s players are impeccably groomed thanks to the help of their personal stylists and careful consideration goes into each ensemble.
The 2012 All-Star weekend had NBA players mixing geek with flash. From Orlando arrivals and player portraits to parties and courtside appearances, players garnered attention for their style of dress in addition to their All-Star skills. Cardigan sweaters, plaid shirts, bow ties, denim jackets and nerdy glasses were among the weekend’s top trends. Here’s a look at players sporting All-Star weekend’s “geek chic” fashions:
