Fans are used to seeing athletes in uniform but each year the ESPY Awards provide us with a glimpse into their personal fashion choices. The biggest names in sports trade in their dirt-stained jerseys, beat-up cleats and helmets in favor of bespoke suits, couture dresses, bold accessories and designer bling. Athletes and their stylists put a lot of thought and preparation into outfits worn off-the-field, court and ice and this night is no exception. While some sportsmen kept it simple, others continued to push fashion boundaries which made for an interesting sartorial showcase.
Here’s a breakdown of the fashions from the 2012 ESPY Awards:
The ESPYS “Best Female Tennis Player” was also one of the evening’s best-dressed females. Maria Sharapova looked statuesque in a dusty blue gown from J. Mendel, with daring cut-out details to further accentuate her frame. She accessorized with a Giuseppe Zanotti clutch, Jimmy Choo shoes, and a cuff and pave diamond stud earrings by Lara Bohine.
Cleveland Browns’ WR, Josh Cribbs, New Orleans Saints’ QB, Drew Brees, and Olympic skier, Bode Miller, all shined in metallics. While Cribbs and Brees kept their gold and silver hues to their jackets alone, Miller’s entire ensemble featured the sheen.
ESPY red carpet regulars Danica Patrick and Jennie Finch showed off their enviable figures in mini dresses. Danica opted for a strapless, patterned cocktail dress while Finch chose a darker, grecian-inspired style.
Lindsey Vonn treated fans to two different ESPYS looks. She hit the red carpet wearing a flowing, ivory Marciano dress, with Simon G jewelry and an Atelier Swarovski necklace. After a quick change, she presented the “Best Moment” award to Tim Tebow in a bright green, one-shoulder textured mini.
Jeremy Lin and Thomas Decoud were both the subject of Pee-Wee Herman comparisons, but Lin is still new to the fashion game. He even noted that most of his accessories, including the bow tie, were actually borrowed from friends.
Three of the evening’s most dapperly dressed males were Green Bay Packers QB, Aaron Rogers, New York Jets QB, Tim Tebow and new L.A. Laker, Steve Nash. These sportsmen continued the grey and purple trend that we saw at this year’s NFL Draft. Rogers paired his sharp, grey pinstripe suit with a skinny, purple striped tie, while Tebow chose a lighter grey shade and a light lavander tie to match. Nash, dressed in Indochino, went with a darker three-piece suit and added pops of the hue through his tie and gingham shirt.
Bubba Watson is never one to shy away from eclectic style choices, both on and off the course. His purple paisley shirt and multi-colored sport coat caused quite a buzz, as did his footwear. Watson’s green and purple argyle socks could give RGIII a run for his money, especially when paired with those matching purple shoes.
The sock enthusiast himself, RGIII, kept his ensemble plain and simple but his socks were a total contrast. There were no inspirational messages this time around. Instead the new Washington Redskins QB described them as colorful and fun.
Several of the Super Bowl winning New York Giants were on-hand to celebrate their “Best Team” nomination. We’re used to seeing them suit up in the same blue uniforms but off-the-field, their style of dress could not be more different. A standard, pinstripe suit for Eli Manning, a chic, dark suit and patterned shirt for Victor Cruz and a Summery ensemble for Jason Pierre-Paul.
Brian Wilson’s dark, three-piece suit, purple beanie and shades were a considerable upgrade from last year’s spandex onesie tuxedo. But in an effort to stand out this year, he accessorized with a sasquatch as his plus one.
The WWE’s Bella Twins were a fashionable pair, with matching side-swept waves and figure-hugging blush and gold-colored gowns.
Matt Kemp has quickly become one of baseball’s biggest sartorial standouts. He’s often favors unique elements of style like this patterned three-piece gray suit, which he balanced out with a plain white shirt and black tie.
It was all in the details for these up-and-coming NFL and NBA stars. Trent Richardson gave a nice shout-out to his alma mater with an Alabama-themed tie. And Anthony Davis rocked a cream-colored suit with special touches like white piping, a dark tie and pocket square, and black-and-white checkered shirt.
Rarely to we have a sports-themed red carpet without a tuxedo-style ensemble. For San Francisco 49er’s TE,Vernon Davis, it was a maroon jacket with black piping along the lapel and a black-and-white polka dot bow tie. Green Bay Packers LB, Desmond Bishop, went with a white jacket and contrasting black lapel.
NBA stars are most notorious for their off-the-court style sense but many of the league’s top fashionistos are currently preparing for the Olympic Games. Despite their absense in-person, we did get a glimpse of the team in all of their fashionable glory. (photo via jocksandstilettojill.com)
