The 2010 Spring Collections showcased by top designers during Fashion Week this past Fall had a common theme: Sports. Let’s recap: Hermes had a Wimbeldon-themed runway show, Lanvin incorporated Sumo wrestling, Y-3 played soccer on the runway and Alexander Wang’s entire collection was inspired by American sports. As the new Autumn/Winter 2010 Menswear collections were introduced in Paris, a new sport was brought into the mix: Boxing.

Jean Paul Gaultier, a French couture designer, sent male models down the runway adorned with bloody faces, black eyes, stitches and fashions inspired by the sport. Belted robes, hoodies and leather jackets were accompanied by sweat towels draped around the neck and of course, boxing gloves. Even the designer himself took his bow looking as those he’d just battled for a few rounds.

To help bring the theme to life even more, the décor included an actual boxing rink, with corseted-female models taking punches, while the men showcased the new designs.

Okay, so maybe JPG went a bit overboard with the bloody additions but overall, the show was actually really cool. And as usual, his new fashions were totally hot. Check out the video:

And over in Milan, the DSquared brand took a similar approach with the debut of their 2010 Menswear Collection. Dubbed the “Hockey Horror Show,” designers Dean and Dan Caten also sent their models down the runway with bruised faces, split lips and bloody knuckles.

The twin designers are Canadian and since hockey is such a popular Winter sport, they felt it was a perfect fit their Autumn/Winter collection and a great way to honor their roots. With an interesting take on the theme, fashions featured Hockey-like jerseys with a rock and roll flair. The show even included crossed hockey sticks at the foot of a faux ice rink runway.

With New York Fashion Week just around the corner, it should be interesting to see how the couture designers continue to blend high-fashion with sports. Now if only we could have our favorite athletes model these fashions...
