A simple black sports bra became an iconic piece of sports fashion during the 1999 Women’s World Cup Final. Brandi Chastain led the United States to victory, after she scored the game-winning goal in a penalty shootout against China. Chastain celebrated by ripping off her jersey to reveal her black Nike sports bra to the world. The moment landed on a Sports Illustrated cover, led to an increase in sales in the sports bra category, and Chastain and her teammates helped to put women’s soccer on the map.

Chastain’s famous celebration still resonates today and this past weekend in New York, she reenacted it for a good cause. The retired soccer star served as an honorary ambassador for the first-ever North American Walk the Walk. The organization raises money and awareness for breast cancer causes, and encourages women and men to become healthier, more fit and to learn how to take charge of their own well-being.

Prior to the walk, Chastain took off her shirt and showcased a custom sports bra to be auctioned off. The bra was decorated with a USA Soccer theme, including a soccer ball and American flag motif.

The first MoonWalk NYC, led by Chastain, kicked off at Randall’s Island. More than 1,500 women and men power walked through the streets of Manhattan while wearing their own brightly colored bras. The event raised money for the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Breast Examination Center in Harlem. For more information on Walk the Walk, visit here.
