Australian Open bling

A Glam Slam covers the latest news and trends in fashion and sports, wherever the two worlds collide.

There's been a lot of talk about female fashions at the Australian Open and rightfully so, but what about the bling? Many have discussed that too short, too revealing, too bold on-court attire can be a distraction to players and their opponents, yet their jewelry can do the same thing.

Several competitors have been seen wearing long dangling earrings, necklaces, bracelets and even rings during tournament play. Aside from interfering with their game, most of these sparklers are so expensive, that losing them during a match could be an even worse distraction. In fact, the term "tennis bracelet" itself became popular when Chris Evert lost her diamond bracelet during the 1987 U.S. Open Championship. She requested the match be suspended until she found it.

Nowadays the bling of female tennis players goes well beyond the tennis bracelet. Serena Williams has a sweet spot for jewelry and she won’t even enter a match without her lucky ring, "The Famous Pave Dome Lucky Ring" from her HSN signature collection. She's absent from the Australian Open due to injury, though her sister Venus has been seen rocking these diamond stunners on the court.

Other tales of tennis bling center around Maria Sharapova, who is once again wearing Tiffany & Co. earrings designed by world-renowned architect, Frank Gehry, especially for the Australian Open tournament . The jewels feature a basic leaf design, outlined in round brilliant diamonds and 18 karat white gold.

“The earrings reflect the spontaneous and graceful lines of Gehry’s architecture,” Sharapova said. “They have a strong and distinctive look, yet they’re elegant and light enough to wear on the court. I am thrilled to wear them at the Australian Open.”

The partnership between Sharapova and Tiffany & Co. will provide the tennis star with Tiffany earrings to wear at each of the four Grand Slam events this year.

With diamonds like theirs, let's hope Maria and Venus can successfully avoid a Chris Evert repeat.
