NBA fashion round-up: All-Star magenta carpet

A Glam Slam covers the latest news and trends in fashion and sports, wherever the two worlds collide.

The NBA rolled out the “Magenta Carpet” for the 2011 All-Star festivities. Since they were held in Los Angeles, a city known for it’s glitz and glamour, the weekend’s stars cranked it up a notch when it came to their style selections. “Hollywood” served as the inspiration for All-Star fashions both on and and off the court.

The NBA All-Star uniforms had several features that payed homage to “Tinseltown.” The bold, block typeface font on the front of the jerseys was inspired by the iconic Hollywood sign, and the East and West team names included the Los Angeles skyline within their lettering. Shiny gold and silver accents added some extra flair to the uniforms. But during last night’s game, it was actually the flashy on-court warm-ups that had fans buzzing. The gear was designed to mimic a three-piece suit, similar to something we might typically see on a Red Carpet. Jackets featured cuffs in the standard formal three snaps and had an embellished internal pocket similar to a suit coat.

But the real fashion show took place when the all-stars hit the pre-game Magenta Carpet. From the style virgins to the style veterans, from sleek suits and skinny ties to leather jackets and shades, these NBA fashionistos dressed to impress. Here are some of the standout styles:

The Miami Heat triumverate of Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade and LeBron James, all opted for slim suits. The guys looked perfectly coordinated as their suits, shirts and ties featured complimentary color schemes. Though the ensembles were a bit more subdued than we would have expected, they still proved why they are often among the fashion favorites.

The Boston Celtics All-Star foursome (Kevin Garnett, Rajan Rondo, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen) sported four pretty standard suits. If Garnett had continued the trend of wearing shades, they easily could have passed as members of the Secret Service. A very well-dressed Secret Service.

There’s still a chance these two might become teammates on the court but when it comes to their off court fashions, Amar’e and Carmelo are definitely on different playing fields. Amar’e looked chic in a charcoal, pinstriped jacket and bowtie, a huge contrast from Melo’s army green trench and mustard yellow shirt and pants combo. Perhaps a trip to NYC would benefit Melo in more ways than one? He could use a few styling tips from New York’s current “King of Fashion.”

Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls and Blake Griffin of the L.A. Clippers have clearly been “model students” when it comes to learning the game and developing their style. Just like many of the All-Star veterans, they spent the weekend showing off both their skills and their keen fashion sense. Derrick’s light gray suit with blue shirt was fresh and hip, while Blake looked like a true Hollywood star in his ensemble.

“Red Carpet” doesn’t necessarily mean a suit is required. Even though they were on opposite sides of the style spectrum, Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard proved you can still look “Hollywood” while rocking casual attire. Kobe’s leather jacket and shades leave us wondering where he left his harley, while Dwight looks like he just shot a Nautica ad.

New Orleans Hornet, Chris Paul, was A Glam Slam’s fashion favorite. Looking perfectly polished in dark patterned suit, contrasting patterned tie and aviators, he looked like he stepped right out of the pages of GQ magazine.
