Fila Skeletoes are the latest addition to the generation of footwear that has been dubbed the “minimalist shoe.” Or perhaps you might be more familiar with the term “toe shoes.” The newest member of Fila’s footwear family launched in February and despite a variety of barefoot shoes already in existence, the brand is taking a different approach to this ever-growing footwear trend.
Companies are continuing to challenge traditional footwear with designs that mimic the benefits of being barefoot. Vibram Five Fingers have been the leader in the toe shoe category and though comparisons are inevitable, the Skeletoes are not intended to be a direct competitor or a replacement. Carving out their own niche within the minimalist shoe market, Fila’s new kicks are a more economical alternative. And unlike Vibram, they are not designed for running. Meant to serve as a lifestyle shoe, the Skeletoes are instead suitable for everyday activities such as walking, biking, boating and swimming.
Upon seeing their design aesthetic, you will understand their name. The lightweight, form-fitting shoes feature Fila’s signature four-toed “skeleton” design. Two-ply nylon and color-matched printing also contribute to their fun, modern look. While style was certainly important, comfort was also a top priority. The Skeletoes have a unique feature called the EZ Slide, a double pocket which combines the two smallest toes for ease of entry. A four-way stretch and two velcro straps ensure a perfect fit, while a multipurpose slip resistant rubber provides maximum grip on all surfaces.
The shoes are designed for men, women and children, with prices starting at $55 for kids and $60 for adults. They are available in a variety of colorways. Check them out:
Fila sent some Skeletoes to A Glam Slam and we tried them out. For those looking to enter into the toe shoe market, the Skeletoes are a great start. Many are skeptical of toe separation but they make this shoe transition very easy to get used to. As an un-seasoned toe shoe wearer, the EZ Slide provides an added level of comfort and pinky toe protection, as opposed to having five toe slots. The shoes also feature two bungee-like pulls that contribute to easy of entry.
The Skeletoes are tough, yet soft, making them easy to put on but durable when you hit just about any surface. They can be likened to a glove for your foot, protecting your every step. And we were pleasantly surprised to learn that even in the cold weather, our feet were kept very warm. The design might not appeal to everyone but a range of bold color combinations make the Skeletoes a modern and edgy alternative to traditional sneaker styles. And of course a huge plus is the price tag, almost half as much as competitors. A small price to pay for the benefits of “going barefoot.”
Have you hopped on the minimalist shoe bandwagon? What do you think? If you want to test out the Skeletoes for yourself, you can pick up a pair here.
