From LoudMouth Pants to the famous plaid “BRayser,” the Tampa Bay Rays caused quite a stir last season when manager Joe Maddon introduced fashion-themed road trips. Taking a cue from the Rays, the St. Louis Cardinals have utilized fashion for a team-building exercise of their own.

The Cards traveled to Los Angeles this past weekend making a very bold style statement: turtlenecks. The team wore their sweaters to Dodger Stadium and again on their flight home to St. Louis. It was Lance Berkman who first brought up the idea to his teammates and since the concept was a work in progress for quite awhile, the guys had ample time to prepare their looks. And the result was nothing short of fantastic. Inspiration ranged from George Steinbrenner’s signature turtleneck and blazer style to 1970′s influences. Some players like Matt Holliday opted for a simple and classy look while Trever Miller rocked a crazy camouflage turtleneck. Jon Jay and Dan Descalso accessorized their turtlenecks with white hats, white shoes and white sport coats.

But the MVP of this fashion exercise was no doubt reliever, Mitchell Boggs. Boggs spent hours scouring the internet trying to the find the perfect threads. After searching for outlandish turtlenecks, “it was love at first sight” when he came across his selection on a 1970′s vintage Web site. Boggs sported a “bird yellow” colored sweater with rainbow trim around the neck and topped off his look with a Khaki blazer. “I think everybody is just trying to have fun,” he told Jim Hayes on the FOX Sports Midwest pregame show.

Apparently, additional themed days are already in the works including a leather pants day and a vest day. But we can’t help but wonder what the Rays think of their new competition. It’s been rumored that they are planning a “skinny jeans, shirt tucked” day themselves. A Glam Slam says a fashion face-off between these two teams is definitely in order.
