The Kentucky Derby is still weeks away but a tremendous amount of time and effort has already gone into preparing Derby day headwear. Betsy Johnson, a designer known for her funky, over-the-top fashions, will partake in the festivities with some clever creations of her own. She has designed Derby millinery that is as big and bold as her personality. Her trio of hats will be unveiled during the Derby events on May 6th and 7th, WWD reports.
“I wanted to do over-the-top hats, and when you think of it, the Kentucky Derby is one big fashion show,” said Johnson. “I’ve designed three hats — the Barbie Hat, which I adore and is so much fun; the Rose Hat, which also has whimsical looking spiders and bugs, and the Cleopatra-meets-Scarlett Hat, which has a pink wig. A hat maker in Brooklyn made me a huge pink straw hat and it’s encrusted allover with pink roses and fake diamonds.”
The custom-designed hats are more than just a fashion statement. Johnson, who is also a breast cancer survivor, has partnered with Chambord Liqueur to support several of the brand’s Kentucky Derby activities. As part of Chambord’s ongoing effort to raise awareness and funds for the breast cancer cause, it’s sponsoring a variety of Kentucky Derby activities including the Kentucky Oaks Fashion Contest to be held at Churchill Downs which Johnson will judge, a Brunch with Betsey Johnson, and custom Derby-style hats which will be available via an online auction.
Fans will also have an opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind Derby-style hat designed by Johnson. One of the hats commissioned by Chambord and designed by Betsey Johnson will be offered via a nationwide online auction with 100% of the proceeds benefitting Johnson’s designated charity, the National Breast Cancer Coalition. The hat will be auctioned off on BiddingforGood.com from April 25th until May 7th. The “Cleopatra-meets-Scarlett” hat will also be featured in a contest on the Chambord facebook page in the coming weeks.
