The 2011 French Open is upon us and there is already some fierce competition on the fashion front. Each tennis Grand Slam is met with a new crop of on-court fashions that often cause as much buzz as the game itself. Last year at Roland Garros, the focus surrounded Venus Williams and her risque, Moulin Rouge-inspired ensemble. With both Williams sisters out of the tournament this year, the outfits will likely be much more subdued. But don’t expect to see plain old tennis whites. The attire from Nike and adidas is bold and bright and both brands have chosen looks that will best compliment the coloring of the red clay courts.

French Open play begins on Sunday, May 22nd. Here’s a look at the styles your favorite players will be sporting when they take center court:

Rafael Nadal:

According to Nike, Rafa is on a journey this year, around the four Grand Slam tournaments and the four elements. This particular outfit focuses on the “Earth” element, with Earth being the clay court. The blue color fighting with the clay he’s playing on is the story of his French Open outfit. Nike payed extra close attention to detail this time around, as this is Rafa’s most high-profile tournament. His bright blue top is made of a dry-fit fabric and the back of the shirt is utilized to tell a story. On his bottom half, Nadal will sport longer-length white board shorts with a velcro wasteband. To finish off his look, Rafa will wear the Nike Air Max Courtballistec 3.3 sneakers in a matching blue and white color scheme.

Maria Sharapova:

Maria always brings an element of style to the game and freedom of movement was an important feature for her this season. The design inspiration for her Summer season look was Paris and the Eiffel Tower. Her sunny yellow-colored dress is made of a lightweight, breathable, dry-fit fabric. The dress has a feminine shape and intricate detailing. It was inspired by old methods of design like corsettry, which were executed in a modern way. Maria will finish off her look with the Nike Lunar Speed 3 sneakers.

Roger Federer:

Roger’s polo for the Summer ’11 season is all about speed. His shirt features the best quality dry-fit material and the bold red color and stripe design are meant to convey the idea of racing. The stripes start on the lower part of body to hightlight detailing on the shoulders and the tone one tone red color is also highlighted in the collar detailing. His dry-fit woven shorts include a bit of stretch for movement and a back button fly pocket inspired by menswear tailoring detail. Roger will wear the Nike Lunar Vapor 8 Tour sneakers to finish off his look.

Caroline Wozniacki:

Wozniacki, who is the face of the adidas by Stella McCartney line, will wear the Stella tank dress with blue ruffles and subtle pops of red color. The dress incoproates the adidas ClimaLite technology, designed to wick moisture off the skin.

Ana Ivanovic:

Ivanovic will sport an adiZero dress that features pink and orange colorblocking and bright green piping. The scoop neck design includes mesh panels on the shoulders and back, half zipper entry on front, a graphic print on the neckline and an elastic waistband.

Fernando Verdasco:

We’ve been seeing Fernando Verdasco rocking bright colors as of late and his French Open ensemble continues that trend. Verdasco will be outfitted in a bold, orange adiZero top, with touches of black and green. He will also wear the black AdiZero Bermuda shorts and black adiZero Feather shoes

Jo Wilfried-Tsonga:

Tsonga will take the court wearing an “intense green,” gray and white adidas adiAce Traditional Polo paired with the adiAce Bermuda grey short. The ClimaCool fabric is meant to provide ultimate moisture management.
