“One Team One Dream” by Sarah Beauchamp #29 Palm Beach Punishers @PrincessPunish
It’s finally here! The 2011 Women’s Full Contact Tackle Football Schedules are out! With growing support, this season promises to be bigger and more competitive than ever. NFL Hall of Famer, Franco Harris has become an owner of the Pittsburgh Passion and Icky Woods is still the head coach of the Cincinnati Sizzle. This season makes my sixth personally, and the fifth season for the Palm Beach Punishers. It also marks big changes and challenges for us.
Like many women’s teams, the Punishers also made the business decision to move from the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL) to the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA). Financially, it will make traveling much easier for such a small team like us. Our new schedule puts us in a new conference and division allowing us to play teams that are much closer; including Tampa Bay, Savannah, Miami, and Jacksonville. Since women’s pro tackle football doesn’t yet have the same level of support and sponsorship that the NFL does; hopefully playing teams that are closer will help to gain the local support of businesses that can profit even when we travel to away games. On a larger scale, for women’s football to make it to the next level, we really need to have one unified league anyway. I just hope that I haven’t retired by the time that happens.
My team and I are well aware of the uphill battles we face regardless of our league, conference, or division. As always, it’s a building year for a team so relatively young in women’s football. Not only do we have many ladies coming off of injuries that required surgery, but it’s no secret that Palm Beach, FL isn’t a “football town”. When I moved here two and a half years ago from the Pittsburgh Passion, I was shocked at how big football is in Florida. However, a city like Palm Beach doesn’t have any major sport franchises to partner with and although there is flag football, we still don’t have a feeder program. We understand that each season we have smaller numbers than most of the other teams in the league. When we roster thirty healthy women vs. a larger team that may roster eighty at the beginning of a season, but due to financial or family issues and injuries may only have seventeen dress for a game against a team of forty makes us the underdogs every time. We just hope that what we lack in numbers and size, we make up for in heart.
The Palm Beach Punishers are still looking for enthusiastic, athletic women who are interested in playing full contact, tackle football this season. There are also coaching and staff positions open. If you would like to make a donation to the team or sponsor me personally feel free to contact me directly; or if you have any questions or are interested in joining the team, contact me @PrincessPunish through Women Talk Sports, or go directly to the Punishers’ website www.palmbeachpunishers.com.
