Frederick Dreier of the Times reports that the New York City Triathletes is changing its rules in order to require that all blind triathletes who wish to qualify for the world championships to race in the same category. This means that those with partial vision must wear blackout glasses during the running portion to take away any sight. This prospect is terrifying for runners who have relied on very minimal vision in the past, but organizers think it will create a critical mass of athletes and perhaps aid in the inclusion of triathlon in the paralympics. The prior categorization of vision impairment into different levels meant sometimes each level only had a few athletes. However, since at least one athlete interviewed said he was going to walk the running portion, it's unclear whether this move might make the sport seem less legitimate to paralympic organizers looking for elite competitors.
