The question asked by this blog, 'who signs a 17-year contract in his late twenties?' was answered conclusively by the NHL: someone who is trying to circumvent the salary cap. The league and now an independent arbitrator have voided the Devils-Kovalchuk deal by arguing that the huge drop-off in salary in the last few years of the contract means that it is a defacto run at the cap. The follow-up question is then 'how big is Kovalchuk's ego that he turns down a legit offer from his former team to try and cheat his way into more money elsewhere?'
