It's little things we take for granted that made a huge difference in women's lives in the early years of feminism. Check out this article from 1885 about the benefits of cycling for women. Common wisdom was that cycling was unladylike at best and caused fertility problems at worst. It turned out to be a vital step in making health and fitness a desirable goal for women, as well as a huge boost for personal mobility. It's unfortunate, however, that some of the negatives 'overcome' in the first paragraph are very much ideals of stereotypical femininity today, especially the part about not eating.
