A big week for women's hockey

As the NHL season gets set to gear up, some historic happenings have enlivened the women's hockey world.* First, the Canadian Women's Hockey League held its first draft, at which Ohio State's Tessa Bonhomme became the first overall pick. The Hockey News produced a video at the event which covers parts of the draft and statements from players and organizers.

There will also be a panel dedicated to women and hockey at the World Hockey Summit, thanks mostly to tireless advocacy by Canadian team captain Hayley Wickehnheiser. Yes, the Canadians are holding a world hockey summit the way others might hold summits on foreign policy or agriculture, because hockey is pretty much the most important thing in the whole country. Considering the way they've kept themselves out of trouble the way we have not over the years, perhaps we could learn something.

*I find it disturbing that the Typepad spellchecker doesn't recognize the possessive form of 'women.' Women are not supposed to unite in doing things, apparently.
