An irreverent look at the news, issues, and personalities of women's sports from a feminist perspective.

Given the lackluster soccer and terrible streaming connectivity in the second half*, WPS didn't win itself any new fans in the quarterfinal. The most interesting thing I saw yesterday was the idea of forming an all-league team at AWK (the most ludicrous thing was the idea that April Heinrichs was commenting somewhere on tactics; her tactic of choice was lob the ball over the top and drive great players into retirement). I was heavily influenced by couple of commentors to that post. My perfect set-up in probably a 3-4-3, but three defenders with the wealth of offensive talent in the league is a nerve-wracking position so I'll settle on 4-3-3.

Keeper: Barnhart. It's entirely likely that in the long wrong Bardsley will turn out to be better, but I can't make that designation based on half a season.

Defenders: Sauerbrun, LePeilbet, Buehler, Riley. Not really a fan of sending defenders forward, but if there are four of them one can be a speedster.

Mids: Dew, Chalupny, HAO. Nice to see Carrie get the start in FCGP's final home match and it really paid off. Chalups needs to be back with the national team, and HAO has found her role as a passer rather than a scorer. Back-up: Sonia Bompastor, who is underrated on the defensive side of the ball.

Forwards: Wambach, Rodriguez, Cheney. Watch the fudging begin! This is the toughest call, because Marta is the best one-v-one player in the world by a huge margin. I don't think she'd play well with Wambach, however, and Wambach needs to be on this team because of her total package of skills provided she STAYS ON HER FEET. That third spot goes to the player who is having the best season at any given time, and it has rotated back and forth too much for me to be sure who I'd use. I go with Cheney right now because she's a straight-ahead, north-south type, but Boquete had a much better close of season so she's a possibility as well.

*I'm giving up cable for the nonce but live sports are not the internet's greatest strength.
