Storm C Ewelina Kobryn only logged 30 seconds of playing time in a loss to Connecticut, but she's blending well with her new team. The Polish transport officially signed June 30 to add depth in the post while three-time MVP Lauren Jackson rehabilitates from left-hip surgery.
Kobryn, who's fluent in English, played against Storm G Tanisha Wright in Poland in 2009 and with former Storm C Janell Burse in the past. Kobryn suited up with New York during exhibition play this season, but was cut to enable her to join her national team in pursuit of an Olympic bid.
Kobryn averaged 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in six EuroBasket games in June.
Since the Storm hasn't practiced, watching film and doing a walk-through on Monday, Kobryn isn't acclimated to the system. She's learned play calls and schemes on the bus, in hotels, and as the team has chatted in restaurants at airports.
"She's getting comfortable with the terms we use and at some point it's just going to be a matter of throwing her to the wolves and she's just going to have to play," Storm PG Sue Bird said. "That will happen sooner than later. Practices will help her but it's a road trip, so we don't practice that much.
"A lot of our time has been spent in the airport and on the bus. And she's fit right in, really. You would have thought she was on the team from the beginning just how she interacts and how she's hanging out."
The Fourth of July holiday helps with its light atmosphere and fun activities. Indiana F Shyra Ely is an Indianapolis native and former Storm reserve. She's connecting with her former teammates to offer a slice of home for the day, according to Storm coach Brian Agler.
Tuesday they'll be enemies as the Fever (7-3) host the Storm (5-3) at Conseco Fieldhouse. The game will be aired free on WNBA LiveAccess.
