Former Gonzaga star Heather Bowman was introduced Wednesday as the new assistant coach at Whitworth. Bowman takes over for Heidi Goicoechea, who resigned in March after six years as the Pirates' assistant coach.

Bowman set the WCC career scoring record with 2,165 points. She was a four-time first-team All-WCC selection.

"I have always hoped to give back to the women's basketball community here in Spokane," said Bowman in a released statement. "I have knowledge and a passion for the game that I hope to pass on to the players at Whitworth in the role of mentor and coach."

Meanwhile Bowman's former teammate Vivian Frieson signed with the WNBL's Townsville Fire. She departs for Australia to join her new team in September after averaging 15.1 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and 2.1 steals in Sweden.

The Seattle native was the first player in Gonzaga history to be drafted by the WNBA, selected by the Tulsa Shock in 2010. She was cut prior to the season beginning.

And on campus, Gonzaga coach Kelly Graves signed G Taelor Karr, a transfer from Kansas State who'll be eligible to play for the 2012-13 season. Karr, who's 5-foot-8, played 32 games and started 29 for the Wildcats as a sophomore last season, helping K-State finish at 21-11 overall and 10-6 in the Big 12.

She finished the season scoring 329 points, grabbing 153 rebounds, passing out 62 assists and blocking five shots. Karr's 10.3 points per game ranked third on the team.

"I love both her athleticism and her skill set," Graves said in a released statement. "She can shoot it with range, can attack the basket, and she's an excellent passer with very good court vision and she's a tremendous rebounder. I like the fact that she's a gym rat and has a very cool demeanor on the court-she's a very confident player and I love that."
