Washington departed Sunday for Europe, its first stint under coach Kevin McGuff's regime. The former Xavier coach was hired in April, replacing Tia Jackson after four consecutive losing seasons.
McGuff had 10 days of practice with his new team before departing to Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The Huskies will play five games, winning the first on Tuesday 63-50 to Sallen Basket. Senior center Regina Rogers led with 14 points while senior center Mackenzie Argens added nine off the bench.
"It was good for us to get out on the court and play a game," McGuff said on the team's website. "Obviously this early we have a long way to go, but I want to make sure we stay focused on the process of getting better."
The Huskies played their game at Fyrishov, a multi-purpose community center in Uppsala, a town about 90 minutes north of Stockholm. Instead of a hard court, the game was played on a softer multi-purpose court, according to the team's website.
In other college news, the newly formatted West Coast Conference released its schedule, Gonzaga playing a different lineup as it heads into its first season without floor general Courtney Vandersloot. The Zags are aiming for their eighth consecutive conference title.
UW should release its schedule soon.
And powerhouse Auburn Riverside High will be looking for a new coach, Adam Barrett accepting an assistant position at University at Albany.
