A charitable hoops weekend: movies, runs and wine tasting

NBA owners thought they put an end to basketball, but not around the Northwest. At least not when it comes to a chance to support the game via charities and moviegoing.

First up is the opening of the flick "The Mighty Macs" on Friday. It's the inspirational tale of Immaculata College, which won the first women's basketball championship in 1972. I'm checking it out Friday afternoon and will have a write-up in Saturday's paper.

On Saturday, more than 300 people are participating in the MVP Challenge 5K for Andrew Moritz. Seattle Times columnist Steve Kelley wrote a column about Moritz's battle with a soft tissue cell cancer.

Moritz was a former Washington men's basketball walk-on and Storm practice player. Current UW assistant coach Adia Barnes, a former Storm player, opted to use her namesake foundation to help Moritz raise funds for what could be a last-ditch effort to save his life.

The event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Green Lake next to the basketball court. Registration is $30 before Saturday and $40 on Saturday. The kids dash is $10 and everyone receives a MVP Challenge T-shirt as part of cost. Sonics Legend Shawn Kemp's foundation is involved and he'll attend while Jamal Crawford is also slated to appear. Lastly on Sunday, the Seattle University women's basketball team is hosting its first benefit to raise money for the program. The Redhawks will have a Wine, Cheese and Chocolate event at Taste Restaurant downtown.

There will be more than a dozen wines to sample with cheese and chocolate to complement the selections. There will also be a silent auction and opportunity to mingle with members of the basketball team along with coach Joan Bonvicini and her staff. Cost is $50 per person.
