Sweet 16: Washington's remaining ties to March Madness

UPDATE: I mistakenly forgot two locals to follow in the remaining of the WNIT tournament. Junior G Sam Pettinger from Archbishop Murphy HS and sophomore G Clare Conricode from Holy Names HS will lineup for Pacific tonight against Utah.

Washington's Division I basketball programs dropped out of various postseason tournaments in the swoop of one weekend.

With Washington State already out of contention, Seattle U lost on Thursday in its Women's National Invitation Tournament opener. On Friday, Eastern Washington dropped a double overtime game at Alaska Airlines Arena against Washington in its WNIT opener. No. 12 seed Gonzaga was up next, losing to No. 5 seed Iowa State on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Lastly, on Sunday, UW couldn't hang with Big West regular-season champion Pacific in the WNIT second-round.

So what to do before a Sue Bird-Lauren Jackson-less Storm season kicking off in May? Jump on another bandwagon, of course!

The obvious choice is sixth-seeded Nebraska, which has the only real local tie remaining in the Big Dance. Former Kentwood star PG Lindsey Moore, a senior, will lead the Huskers in a tough matchup against No. 2 seed Duke on Sunday at 11:32am (PT) in the Norfolk Region. The Blue Devils had to rally from a 15-point deficit at home against Oklahoma State to advance. The Huskers defeated Texas A&M;.

 

In the WNIT, there's former Lewis and Clark HS F Hayley Hendricksen, a deep reserve, on Saint Mary's roster. SMC plays fellow West Coast Conference rival BYU on Wednesday. (SMC's other locals are out due to injury).

If you don't like those choices, how about sticking to your Pac-12 roots? Utah plays Pacific on Thursday in a WNIT Sweet 16 matchup. In the NCAA bracket, top-seeded Stanford faces No. 4 seed Georgia at 6pm (PT) on Saturday in the Spokane Regional while No. 2 seed California plays No. 6 seed LSU at 8pm (PT) in the Spokane Regional.

If none of those teams piques your basketball interest, may I suggest a good book until the WNBA season begins?

RANK 'EM: Well, it's judgement time. Here's my final poll and who's still alive in the tournament. Theoretically, I'd like to at least have the 16 teams in my poll. I would also love to have those teams also in my top-16. But, ah, there's always upsets like LSU-Penn State to mess everything up. Anyway, teams in bold are still alive.
