Many disagreed with my selection of Storm G Tanisha Wright for All-WNBA first team, but, as the coaches see, the co-captain is one of the better defenders in the league. And, if I'm picking a first squad, I want a true, lock-down defender in my starting rotation. I'll let the league press release break it down.

As a side note, Chicago F Elena Delle Donne is the 2013 Rookie of the Year while teammate Sylvia Fowles was named Defensive Player of the Year. Washington coach Mike Thibault is expected to be named Coach of the Year on Saturday when his team hosts Atlanta in Game 2 of its opening round series. Forwards Swin Cash (Chicago) and Tamika Catchings (Indiana) were the 2013 recipients of the Kim Perrot Sportsmanship Award. On Thursday, the WNBA awarded Candace Parker as the 2013 MVP.

Congrats to all, especially Wright.

 

Tanisha Wright Named to 2013 WNBA All-Defensive First Team

Fourth Career Honor for Storm Guard

 

SEATTLE - Tanisha Wright has been named to the 2013 WNBA All-Defensive First Team, the league announced today.

 

Wright, who is known for her lockdown defense, was selected to the First Team for the fourth time in her career. She was also designated with the honor in the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons.

 

“Tanisha is the most focused defender in the league,” said Storm head coach Brian Agler. “She takes great pride in her ability to take on tough assignments, is very active in our schemes and keeps our teams’ effectiveness at a high level.”

 

Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky was named as the 2013 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, with Angel McCoughtry, Armintie Herrington, Tamika Catchings and Wright rounding out the First Team. The All-Defensive Second Team includes Minnesota Lynx forward Rebekkah Brunson, Indiana Fever guard Briann January (Lewis & Clark High), San Antonio Silver Stars guards Jia Perkins and Danielle Robinson, Tulsa Shock forward Glory Johnson and Atlanta Dream center Erika de Souza.

 

A panel of the WNBA’s 12 head coaches voted on the WNBA All-Defensive Team, selecting First and Second Teams by position. Coaches were not permitted to vote for players from their own team.  Players earned five points for each First Team vote and three points for a Second Team vote.

 

The Storm takes on the Lynx tonight at 6 p.m. in Minnesota for Game 1 of the first round of the Western Conference Semifinals, followed by Game 2 on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome. Game 3, if necessary, will be played on Tuesday, Sept. 24 in Minnesota, with game time still to be determined. Game 1 will be broadcast on NBA TV and Game 2 will air on ESPN2.
