Former Gonzaga standout Vivian Frieson will return to her native city as the new assistant coach at Seattle U, head coach Joan Bonvicini announced Thursday. Frieson, who was the first Zag drafted by a WNBA team, replaces Shaquala Williams. The latter left in March to take a similar position with the Storm.

Frieson, 26, will play a part in recruiting, position development, scouting and assisting with the SU summer camps, according to Bonvicini. The Redhawks finished at 16-16 last season, not advancing to postseason play. Bonvicini graduated three seniors from the roster.

"I'm thrilled to be working with such a great staff and young, hungry team who wants to continue to get better," Frieson said in a released statement.

Frieson was expected to join former GU coach Kelly Graves in Oregon as a video coordinator for the upcoming college season. She began her transition into coaching with Graves at her alma mater for the 2013-14 season as a interim assistant coach, administrative assistant, and camp counselor.

Frieson was drafted by the Shock in 2010 but did not make the regular-season roster. A former star at Garfield High, Frieson played overseas in Australia and Sweden before deciding to end her playing career.

"She has an infectious personality that will highlight our program," Bonvicini said.
