Storm All-Star Lauren Jackson made another appearance in her native Australia, providing more details about her injury after the closing ceremony of the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup. Jackson, who'll turn 30 in May, told the News Weekly (Albury Wodonga) that an Achilles injury didn't force her to leave play with Spartak Moscow. Other Australian newspapers first reported that Jackson, a three-time WNBA MVP, had an acute Achilles injury and returned home earlier this month for rehabilitation at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.
The Storm confirmed the injury, stating that coach Brian Agler was in contact with Jackson. Agler added that estimates it would take three-months for her to heal were extreme, however. He said she was being further evaluated and the process could take weeks to remedy, Jackson possibly returning for EuroLeague play.
Jackson is quoted as telling the News Weekly that "it's a tendon underneath it (Achilles) that's been torn a little bit and I've pinched a nerve so it's quite painful." She is confident the injury isn't career-ending and is focused on returning for the upcoming WNBA season. Jackson averaged 21.6 points and 9.6 boards in being named Finals MVP during the 2010 championship run.
Training camp begins May 14 but Spartak is already involved in Russian Cup play.
"There's no better facility or place in the world for me to be to really get better and work on my game and focus on that stuff," said Jackson of rehabbing at AIS. "I know that I can get back there and get strong and work and get my body back into great physical shape for the next WNBA season."
Injuries aside, the 6 foot 5 power forward estimated being able to play at least five more years and retiring in Seattle. Jackson was the No. 1 overall draft pick to the Storm in 2001 and is signed through the 2011 season.
