Seattle University coach Joan Bonvicini remains undefeated in five games against Long Beach State, the program where she started her career in 1979. The Redhawks defeated the 49ers 73-54 to snap a six-game losing streak on Friday.
"This was the first time all year we really played a full 40 minutes," Bonvicini told reporters. "I thought we played very good defense ... and the key tonight was we had a lot of people contribute. We have gotten better over the last few games, while it doesn't always show in the score. Tonight was a really good reward for all of our work over the past few weeks."
Beach drew as close as nine points midway through the second half, but Seattle U. finally finished a game off, an issue in previous matchups. Junior G Elle Kerfoot and former Federal Way standout Salena Dickerson, a senior, led with 13 points apiece while freshman Ashley Ward had 10 points.
Bonvicini's homecoming included former star Penny Toler, current Los Angeles Sparks general manager who is pictured far left, being presented a game ball. There was also a postgame reception with notable alumni in attendance. Bonvicini (pictured center) coached 12 season's at Long Beach, accumulating a 325-71 all-time record, including two trips to the NCAA Final Four.
The Redhawks (6-17) will close out the home half of the 2010-11 schedule this upcoming week. Seattle U will host their annual Pink Zone game against Eastern Washington on Tuesday at 7 p.m. On Feb. 12, the Redhawks will host Senior Night versus Cal State Bakersfield at 4 p.m.
In other basketball news, former Kentwood High star Courtney Vandersloot scored 25 points with 14 assists in Gonzaga's 87-67 win over Portland on Friday. The Zags (20-4, 8-0 WCC) drew 4,917 fans, its fourth-highest crowd in school history.
