Washington's new completed staff began its first day on the job Monday, former Storm champion Adia Barnes joining Kevin Morrison and Mike Neighbors on coach Kevin McGuff's staff.
And apparently the group is already in a dog fight for one of the area's top forward. According to ESPNU HoopGurlz, Covington native Katie Collier has both Washington and Gonzaga in the lead to attend in 2012. Collier is a 6-foot-3 interior threat who stars at Seattle Christian High.
Ranked 22nd in the ESPNU HoopGurlz 100 her class, Collier was selected MVP of the Nisqually League during her junior season.
Landing Collier is almost a must for Washington since part of the reason he was hired was to draw the top in-state talent back to Montlake. But GU being a Jesuit school may offer some familiarity to Collier, plus the program is on an uptick.
Seattle Christian teammate Lexi Petersen will attend Oregon in 2011-12.
UW is also wooing former Nebraska G Kellie McCann-Smith this week. She suffered a back injury during the final nine games of the season, averaging 3.0 points and 1.1 rebounds as a freshman for the Huskers. A former Clarkston High star, she told coach Connie Yori that she wanted to play closer to home.
Meanwhile at Seattle University, coach Joan Bonvicini announced the signing of Jasmine Lemon. The Renton native is a star PG at Kennedy Catholic High and is one of six new faces expected on campus next season.
