Jessica Jensen Sweeps Nikita Chickita USA 2010
"It was my first all-girl event and I had so much fun!"
Winner Jessica jensen
You’re bombing a run in Utah when you look over at a contest zone located at the bottom of the hill, where snowboarders are ripping. Woah, that guy pulled a clean rodeo! As you ride closer you realize, all the shredders are chicks! That’s how it’s done for the Nikita Chickita USA 2010.
Nikita brightened the slopes of Brighton, Utah, as 46 girls showed up to shred the course for the US competition. Up for grabs is a one year- sponsorship deal with Nikita Clothing and $1,000 to the top pro rider. 17- year old Jessica Jensen swept both the AM and PRO divisions, throwing vicious back 5's and taking top honors.
“It was my first all-girl event and I had so much fun!" she said. "The jam format took all the stress away from the comp and that was great.”
The park included 5 rails and boxes, leading to two, consecutive, 20-foot kickers ending in a wall ride finish. Snowboarders chose their line and pulled out all the stops. Paige Rainear pulled front board back one's and nollie back tails. Competitors were as young as 13- year old Kirra Kostenburg, amped to compete in the all-girls contest.
Not your average contest- Judges scored the snowboarders based on four individual categories: Style, Amplitude, Technicality, and Landing. Nikita Chickita contest organizers created this format to encourage the girls to go all out, throw down their best tricks and have a great session.
The course consisted of the option of a signature Brighton down tube or a down to flat kink, followed by choice of a couple of quirky boxes onto an easy stylin’ flat box then into a double jump line. Last, but not least, competitors chose from one of the three wallrides to wrap up their run; the most popular being the gigantic Gatorade cooler set up for some epic taps and lofty airs. Of the 40 girls vying for spots in the finals (the line at the start gate looked like that outside the ladies room later on in the evening), ten were chosen to move on to finals in each category.
After the competition, snowboarders kicked back at the Canyon Inn for some drinking and dancing and yes- a dance-off.
Top Tricks: Ms. Colleen Quigley putting down the ever-elusive Rodeo, fellow team rider Gabby Maiden’s eccentric style and super presses, and thirteen-year-old Kirra Kotsenburg slaying a back 5 over the kicker.
Winning Runs: backside 3 followed by back 5 and stylish trickery on the jibs. Second and Third place went to Midori Ortari and Ranea Palma respectively.
