21-year-old Sherri Cruse is one of the elite racers in the burgeoning sports of women’s professional motocross and supercross. At the inaugural X Games Women’s Super X race, Cruse took home a silver medal and in that same year (08’) she was one of only four women to win a moto at the AMA/WMA Women’s Pro Motocross Nationals.
Continuing to make her mark, the petite racer from Bakersfield, CA finished on the podium multiple times in the 2009 Lucas Oil AMA Women’s Pro Motocross Championship finishing out the series in 3rd.
For the 2010 season, Cruse is one of only a handful of pro women racers to ride for an AMA Pro Team becoming the newest member of the Team Suzuki City Nitro Circus. Sidelined from training for a few weeks due to a broken toe, she still has been keeping busy representing her sport.
DYLA caught up with her for a quick Q&A; as she was headed to Carlsbad, CA to be molded for a future Keep A Breast sculpture to be auctioned off as a fundraiser.
How did you first get into motocross?
I got my first dirt bike when I was 9. My dad surprised me with a KTM 65cc. I started racing shortly after I got my bike. My brother rode too so I was determined to beat him, he was always my hero.
What is your favorite track on the National Motocross series and why?
I like Thunder Valley in Lakewood, Colorado it is the only National that has a night moto and I have won there before. I also like Southwick in Mass it is deep sand and gets really rough.
Which do you like the most, motocross or supercross?
I love both. Motocross is a little easier because of have doing it longer. I like motocross because it gets rough and it’s fast but supercross is great too. You have to really be smooth, get the rhythm down, jump some steep jumps out of corners so you have to have good corner speed. I am hoping there are more opportunities for women to race supercross in the future.
What is the best part about riding?
It’s just fun. You don’t think about all the other stuff going on in your life. You are just thinking about riding. Plus it’s something you can always get better at, so it is challenging to try to find ways to go faster.
What are your goals for the 2010 season?
Treat each moto like it is the only one, the last one, so that I put my all into every lap.
When you can’t ride or train, what do you spend the day doing?
Go crazy! No, I watch a lot of Fuel TV and movies, play with my dog, Charlie, and catch up on Facebook.
What do you want other girls to know about motocross?
It is really fun, [Motocross] is not just for guys. Don’t let the bikes intimidate you. If you want to try it, go to a dirt bike school and learn the basics on a loaner bike, (like train2ride.com) or just buy a bike and go for it!
Who are your current sponsors?
I have a good group of people helping me race this year: Team Suzuki City Nitro Circus, Parts Unlimited, Thor, NTS-Inc, Roxy, Dunlop Tires, Von Zipper, ODI, MMI, RK Chains Excel Rims, Motion Pro, Rekluse, Renthal, KG Clutches, Vortex, Motul Oil, K & N Filters, Asterisk, Leatt, Sunstar, Renegade Racing Fuels, RG3 Suspension, Shoei, Crower Performance, TLR Performance, Boyesen, Alpinestars, Thermo Probe, Hansen & Associates, MGX Unlimited, Mishimoto, CV4, Two Brothers, ICW, Crew Wear, Millenium, Stomp Grip, Bravo Condoms, Renthal, QTM Wheels, and Skull Candy.
