Better waves greet second day of competition
Great surf greeted Australia’s top young surfers on day two of the Rip Curl GromSearch presented by Air Asia and Power Balance at Jan Juc on Victoria’s Surfcoast.
With the better waves came consistent high scores across all divisions and Victoria’s Nikki Van Dijk set the standard early in the day posting an emphatic win in round one of the 16 Girls division. Van Dijk scored an excellent 8.33 ride and the talented 16 year old Phillip Island surfer is aiming to defend both her national and international GromSearch titles in her last eligible season.
“It was tricky and difficult out there but at least there’s waves which are way more high performance than yesterday” said Van Dijk. “I definitely want to try for the national and international titles again as it’s my final year in these events.”
Local surfer Zoe Clarke was another standout today notching up the highest score of the event so far when she scored an outstanding 9.77 out of a possible 10 which also awarded her the Air Asia wave of the day. Zoe also achieved the highest heat tally of the event so far with 18.10 for her top two scoring rides.
Byron Bay’s Soli Bailey found better form today winning through to round three along with good performances from Tasmania’s Hamish Renwick, Sunshine Coast’s Eli Steele and Gold Coast’s Will Morrison who all won through their 16 Boys round two heats.
Soli Bailey commented on the quality of the GromSearch events after his winning heat today saying, “I came second in the series last year and I’m hoping to go one better this year - There is heaps of competition this year and it will be tough but I’m looking forward to it.”
Conditions should be good for tomorrow’s final day with possible offshore winds early and a predicted swell increase throughout the day should be ideal for finals across all divisions along with the much anticipated Power Balance Expression Session!
All the results across all divisions can be found later today on the Surfing Victoria website at surfingvictoria.com – simply follow the link to Rip Curl GromSearch to find results download. The 2010 Rip Curl GromSearch Series is brought to you by Power Balance and Air Asia with the support of Surfing Australia, Waves Magazine and Fuel TV.
