Whose idea was it to start the group?
The idea to start the group came from a few of the heads of our SL network.
the network consists of area specific sites aimed at promoting and encouraging luge in their area. For instance we currently have http://www.sydneystreetluge.com , http://www.brisbanestreetluge.com , http://www.canberrastreetluge.com as well as several others in the pipeline. The idea was really to promote female involvement within Street Luge. Australia has not only the largest luge population but the most women, even so we only have five.
The idea stemmed and snowballed from there, I was bought on board, due to my availability, at the time there were only three riders, that has slowly grown.

How were they first exposed to luge?
It’s the case with most ,if not all, of the girls that they’ve gotten into luge simply by knowing someone who was already in the sport. Be it through spouses or friends the general reaction has been ‘screw standing on the sidelines, I wanna get there!’ Its becomes an addiction, once you first roll, that’s it, you want to do it more and more and get better and better.
What is the experience of luge like??
Riding a luge is like any extreme sport, its a complete rush. Adrenaline pumping thorough your system giving you that high. However, at the same time its almost like meditating; you’re so intensely focused on what you are doing and concentrating on getting the perfect line into a corner and breaking at just the right time, all at over 100 km/h. your focused on keeping yourself just safe. Its just you and the board, the rest of the world ceases to matter.
Outside the actual riding, the luge community itself is fantastic. Its a real social cross section. we have business executives, builders, students, scientists, mums and dads. Its just one big family. I think when you originally start out its the prospect of riding that gets you into the sport, but its the amazing people that keep you there.

Do you ride anything else?
For a lot of the Aussie girls this is the most extreme thing they’ve ever done. However there are a lot of overseas girls that ride in both skate and luge disciplines.
Cheers
