Athletes usually fare pretty well on “Dancing with the Stars” but Ron Artest - one of the most popular NBA players – failed to impress during Monday’s night’s season 13 premiere. Artest, aka Metta World Peace, only scored 14 out of 30 points after completing his cha cha with partner Peta Murgatroyd. At the end of Tuesday night, he was the first contestant voted off the new season of Dancing.
On the other end of the spectrum, Hope Solo, starting goalkeeper for the US women’s national soccer team, was near the top of the leaderboard. Solo danced the Viennese waltz with partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy and the show’s three judges awarded her 21 points out of 30, one of the highest scores of the evening.
Even with the high scores, the judges commented that Solo needs to leave some of her athleticism off the dance floor. Carrie Ann Inaba warned: “Just be aware of muscling things — it’s a natural tendency for you.”
Solo said during a televised rehearsal that she knew her athleticism might be a hurdle in ballroom dancing where women tend to be dainty and delicate. Still, she’s sure to be a fan favorite and the judges commended her for her beautiful lines, posture and rotation. She took on a challenge admittedly outside her comfort zone and demonstrated she’s got all the ingredients to be a serious contender.
To vote for “Team Hope and Maksim,” fans can call the toll-free number 1-800-868-3408, text “VOTE” to the same number (for AT&T customers only), or go on-line to abc.com and register to vote. The phone and text number will remain the same throughout the season. Fans can start voting multiple times during and immediately after each performance show. Phone and text lines will stay open until 30 minutes after the end of the show. Online voting will continue to be open until 8 a.m. PT the following day, when the DWTS Results Show will air (Tuesdays at 8/7C) and the couple with the lowest combined score from judges and viewer votes will be eliminated from the competition.
