Tennis legend Martina Navratilova, winner of 59 Grand Slam titles, a record 9 Wimbledon singles championships, and an unrivaled 344 tournament victories, is the latest athlete to waltz onto Dancing with the Stars.
The 55-year-old Navratilova is the only player in history to win Grand Slam titles in four different decades, including a curtain-closing U.S. Open victory in mixed-doubles at age 49. She’s an inspiration who shattered numerous records with her amazing left-handed serve. Two years ago, Navratilova battled and beat breast cancer and is now a spokeswoman for breast cancer awareness along with a commentator for the Tennis Channel.
Navratilova’s professional partner on DWTS, which premieres on ABC on Monday, March 19th 8 p.m. ET, is Tony Dovolani who danced with Chynna Phillips last season.
Other celebrity contestants for season 14 include former Family Matters star Jaleel White, aka Urkel, The View co-host Sherri Shepherd, actress Melissa Gilbert, and soul veteran Gladys Knight. Also competing for the disco ball trophy will be Melrose Place alum Jack Wagner, actors Roshon Fegan and William Levy, singer-songwriter Gavin Degraw, mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver and TV host Maria Menounos.
Last season, actor J.R. Martinez and partner Karina Smirnoff took home the mirrorball trophy with reality TV star Rob Kardashian and partner Cheryl Burke coming in second. Other previous champions include “Dirty Dancing” actress Jennifer Grey, Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger and gymnast Shawn Johnson.
We haven’t seen a tennis player on the show since Monica Seles (who was eliminated in the second episode of Season 6) so let’s hope Navratilova performs better. Good luck, Martina!
