We all know the major sports leagues are trying to court women. Female fans are smart, passionate and guess what? They like to spend money.
The National Football League has an assortment of licensed product targeted to gals and a whole section on their website dedicated to selling team jerseys and accessories to women.
Now, just in time for the NBA Finals, the National Basketball Association has announced a limited edition line of licensed stilletos. The new licensing deal with HerStar will see two styles, one in micro-suede and one with crystals, both of which will be available for all 30 NBA teams.
Holly Joffrion, founder and chief executive officer, HerStar says “We understand how much women love their shoes and recognize that going to an NBA game can be an event beyond the hardwood. We’re able to combine the love of basketball and footwear together, allowing female fans another way to display their passion for the game.”
The line represents the first-ever officially licensed sports high-heel collection. The crystal pump style features custom-made 6-inch heels with each team’s logo hand-laid in Middle Eastern crystals, and retails at $250.
I understand that most women love shoes (though I’ll take a comfy pair of sneakers any day) but I don’t see myself walking the four or five blocks from the parking lot to Staples Center wearing the Lakers version of these heels. Not because I’m not a Lakers fan, but because I go to watch the game rather than have people watch me.
Christina Aguilera and Christina Milian can make fashion statements wearing studded Louboutin sky high heels while sitting courtside at Staples. And if you’ve ever been to a Lakers game you know that many people go to be seen and to see other people. It’s less about the game and more about the experience.
Those sitting up in the 300 section of Staples are the diehard fans; the ones that bleed purple and gold. These are the fans that might not be able to afford the $2000 courtside tickets but go to the games to root for their favorite players. They’ll wear Lakers jerseys and paint their faces but I doubt you’ll find a pair of stilettos up there. It’s a bit tough to jump up and down wearing six inch heels.
What do you think? Will you be buying a pair of these platform pumps to wear to a game?
