Day of the GirlThe Cincinnati Bengals might have rejected Katy Perry’s “Roar” as a theme song, but the United Nations has adopted it for their International Day of the Girl.   Celebrated for the second time this year, Day of the Girl focuses its efforts on lifting up the most marginalized group in the world. If you’re reading this on your computer or your phone, then you’re one of the lucky ones – but many girls around the world don’t know how to read and are still struggling for basic human rights.

This year, the UN theme is girls’ education. Worldwide, 35 million girls have never gone to school & only 30% of girls are enrolled in secondary school. By improving access for girls to go to school, we’re not just sharpening young minds — we’re concurrently reducing mortality and poverty rates and creating a more democratic world for girls everywhere.

Organizations, such as the Malala Fund, are committed to bringing education opportunities to girls around the world. Malala, you may remember, is the young Pakistani girl who the Taliban tried to assassinate for speaking up about girls’ education.
