Everyone loves a good comeback story.
Gymnast Alicia Sacramone is living one. As a young stand-out, Sacramone anticipated making her Olympic debut at the 2004 Athens games. However she performed poorly at Nationals that year and nearly quit the sport.
Four years later, the Boston-born gymnast came back to become the U.S. team leader at the Beijing games. Once again, things went awry as Sacramone lost her balance on the beam during the team finals. The pressure carried over to floor exercise and the U.S. women, who were contenders for the gold medal, ultimately took home silver.
Now 23 (Sacramone celebrated a birthday in December) the 2008 Olympian gymnast and 2012 hopeful is out for redemption. In her Team USA blog she reflects back on last year and her decision to continue competing.
Deciding to make a come back. I thought I’d play around in the gym a little bit and see where life takes me, but as I got more serious in the gym so did my goals. It first started off with, “let me see if I can get back into gymnastics shape,” then it turned into “let’s see how I do at camp,” THEN its turned into…”well what the heck let’s see if I can make it to World Championships.” As the year progressed, so did my gymnastics, I was in better shape than I was in at the Olympics and for the first time in a LONG time in my gymnastics career I didn’t have one body part taped.
So how did 2010 turn out and what’s in store for Sacramone as she preps for the next Olympics? Read her latest blog and find out.
