Soccer: USA to play in England on April 2

While the US Women’s National Team was finishing a 6-day camp in Florida, US Soccer announced that they will be playing a friendly match against England on April 2. This will be the first match ever in England for the US Women.
The match will be played in Matchroom Stadium in East London, which is home to English League One side Leyton Orient. The stadium, also called Brisbane Road, seats just over 9,000 fans. The game is part of a 20-day training camp for the US Women as they prepare for the World Cup, which will take place from June 26 to July 17 in Germany.
“First of all, England is a soccer country and the atmosphere while playing a game there will be wonderful,” said U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Pia Sundhage. “The World Cup is being played in Europe so the more time we can spend there the better.”
The USA has only played England 10 times in it’s 27-year history. Four of the games have been in Europe (two in Italy, one in France, one in Portugal) and four in the United States. The last two matches took place in China, including the very last one; a quarter-final match in the 2007 World Cup in China, which the US won 3-0.
“I’ve been on this team for almost 15 years and to be finally going to England is really exciting for our players and staff,” said U.S. captain Christie Rampone. “It will not only be a great experience for our team, but a competitive match against a country that’s also in the World Cup. I’ve played with and against a bunch of English players in WPS and we all have great respect for their commitment to the game.”
The match is set to kick off at 8:06 pm local time and will air live on ESPN2 with coverage starting at 3 pm ET.
