The Algarve Cup is well under way with the first 6 matches played. The USA faced Japan first for Group A and won 2-1. The first goal came in the 8th minute when Amy Rodriguez scored off a play that started with Nicole Barnhart in goal. Her shot from 18 yards out beat Japan’s Miho Fukimoto to make it 1-0 USA. Just 10 minutes later, Heather O’Reilly did work o the right side of the field to get a cross of to Megan Rapinoe who finished it to double the lead. Aya Miyama then reduced the lead in the 29th minute with a goal off a free kick to top right corner, and the score ended 2-1 in favor of the USA. In the other Group A match, Finland lost to Norway 2-1. Goals were scored by Laura Kalmari in the 28th minute for Iceland, Elise Thorsnes a minute later, and Isabell Herlovsen in the 39th to give Norway to win. Norway and the USA are now on top of Group A.
In Group B, Sweden was upset by Iceland, losing 1-2. Margret Vidarsdottir and Katrin Jonsdottir scored for Iceland while Josephine Oqvist scored the lone goal for Sweden. Meanwhile, Denmark was taking on China. Theresa Nielsen scored the only goal of the match for Denmark just 30 seconds into the game, making it the fastest goal in Algarve Cup history. Iceland is now in first place in Group B.
In Group C action, Romania won 2-0 against Chile with goals in the 34th and 52nd minutes. Portugal stands in fist place after a 3-1 win against Wales. Goals were scored in the 12th, 19th, 57th minutes for Portugal and in the 42nd for Wales.
Next up on March 4, Japan takes on Finland, USA takes on Norway, Iceland takes on China, and Denmark takes on Sweden all at 10 am ET. Portugal will take on Chile while Wales and Romania play at 1 pm ET.
