The Algarve Cup continued today with the second day of group play. Six matches were played across the southern region of Portugal and we learned a little bit about what the championship match will look like.
Day 2 of the Algarve Cup started off with Japan crushing Finland with 5 goals. Shinobu Ohno kicked things for Japan with her goal in the 16th minute of the match. Just two minutes later Nahomi Kawasumi doubled the lead before adding another goal at the beginning of the second half. Mami Yamaguchi scored the last two goals for Japan in the 70th and 86th minutes.
Finishing off Group A play, the USA defeated Norway 2-0 with goals from Lindsay Tarpley in the 33rd minute, assisted by Amy Rodriguez, and Carli Lloyd in the 63rd minute on a solid effort to get past a defender and unleash a shot from outside the penalty box. With that win, they earned a spot in the Championship Match.
In Group B, Iceland came back from losing 1-0 to beat China 2-1. Margaret Vidarsdottir scored both goals for Iceland in the 27th and 50th minutes before Ma Jun scored for China in the 21st minute.
Sweden defeated Denmark 3-1. Jessica Shore opened the scoring in the 8th minute putting Sweden on top. Kristine Pedersen then equalized the game on the 10th minute. In the second half, Josephine Oqvist came through for Sweden in the 54th minute before Shore secured the win with a second goal four minutes later.
In Group C Portugal and Chile played to a scoreless draw, and Wales defeated Romania 2-1 with two second half goals. Cosmina Dusa scored a goal for Romania in the 40th minute but Jessica Fishlock and Helen Lander scored goals for Wales in the 60th and 72nd minutes, respectively.
Over in Cyprus, more history was made as Scotland earned a win over England for the first time since the teams first met. Kim Little scored her goal in the 26th minute, and Jennifer Beattie topped it off with her goal in the 56th minute.
Holland beat France 2-1. Renee Slegers scored the first goal of the match in the 6th minute. Camille Abily then scored for France to even things out a minute later. Manon Melis then scored a late goal to give Holland the win.
Russia defeated Northern Ireland 2-1 on goals from Tatiana Skotnikova in the 41st minute, and Elena Fomina off a penalty kick in the 52nd minute. Ashley Hutton scored for Northern Ireland in the 9th minute.
South Korea and Mexico played to a 1-1 draw. Jeon Ga-Eul scored for South Korea in the 15th minute.
New Zealand bounced back from an embarrassing 4-1 loss to Holland with a 2-1 win against Switzerland. Canada defeated Italy 1-0 with a goal from Jonele Filigno in the 33rd minute.
The last matches of group play will be played on March 7 for both tournaments. Click here for kickoff times.
