The 2nd week of Women’s Professional Soccer is over and the season is well underway! The second week should have consistent three matches, but the Philadelphia Independence match versus magicJack was canceled because of severe thunder and lightning. Instead, just two matches were played. The Atlanta Beat earned a win over Sky Blue FC, and the Boston Breakers lost their home opener to the Western New York Flash.

On Saturday, Atlanta’s young roster took the field against a more experienced Sky Blue roster, but Megan Lenczyk scored the lone goal for the Beat beating Karen Bardsley on a 1v1. India Trotter played a through ball to Lenczyk who was able to toe-poke it past Bardsley. Carrie Dew ran the ball down and tried to kick it away but the ball had crossed the goal line according to the assistant referee.

On Sunday, the Boston Breakers hosted the WNY Flash. Loaded with outstanding players, both teams attacked very well but the defenders had a lot of work to do. Alex Morgan and Christine Sinclair had been connecting well all game long for the Flash and finally, in the 64th minute, they paired up for a goal. Morgan ran the ball down to the end line where she played it to Sinclair who finished from 6 yards out.

In the 90th minute, Gemma Davison was able to double the lead with a low shot from 20 yards out. The Breakers then got one back in stoppage time when Lauren Cheney had a cross block by Ashlyn Harris, in goal for the Flash. Kelly Smith was there to finish it with a header.

Boston, Western New York, and Atlanta are all tied fro 1st place with 3 points each. Philadelphia and New Jersey are tied for second with 1 points each, and magicJack is in last place with 0 games played so far.
