Women’s Professional Soccer is now 5 weeks into the season and the WNY Flash and magicJack have yet to lose a match. The Flash defeated Sky Blue FC 3-1 on Friday, and magicJack defeated the Atlanta Beat 2-0 on Sunday. The Boston Breakers fell to the Philadelphia Independence on Sunday as well by a score of 2-0.
Marta took part on all three goals for the Flash on Friday night as she scored one and assisted two. The first goal came in just five minutes into the match after a long punt from Ahslyn Harris found Marta who headed the ball to the feet of a sprinting Alex Morgan, who took a touch around Sky Blue goalkeeper, Karen Bardsley, and placed the ball inside the net. The Flash increased the lead in the 40th minute after Marta played the ball back to Caroline Seger who’s shot went past Bardsley. In the 66th minute, Sky blue was able to get one back when Therese Sjogran passed the ball to Adriana, who slotted the ball past Harris in the first minute of her first WPS match. Marta finished it off in the 77th minute when Morgan assisted her breakaway goal this time to seal the win.
The Atlanta Beat were defeated by magicJack with goals from Ella Masar in the first half and Christen Press in the second. The first goal came in the 24th minute when Lindsay Tarpley played a long ball into the penalty area where Alli Lipsher got a hand on it to deflect it. it was enough and Ella Masar ran onto it to finish it off to put the home side up 1-0. Marian Dalmy set up Christen Press for her first goal of the season to make it 2-0. With that, magicJack is 3-0 with 9 points in second place, just one point below the Flash which has played one more match and the one point from a tie with the Beat.
On Sunday, FSC broadcast the game between the Philadelphia Independence and the Boston Breakers. This was Philly’s home opener and they did things the right way for the hometown fans as they took the Boston breakers down with 2 goals. After many close chances, Philly finally got on the board in the 41st minute when Natasha Kai took a touch to control a long ball from Leigh Ann Robinson, took a shot that hit the post and then followed up up with an ugly, diving header to make it 1-0. Philly finished it up in the 54th minute when Amy Rodriguez’s shot was saved by Alyssa Naeher but Lianne Sanderson somehow placed the ball inside the goal from a very tight angle. Still the Breakers are above Philly in the standings with 6 points, while Philly is in 4th place with 4 points.
Next Week:
Friday, May 14: Boston Breakers @ WNY Flash at 7:30 p.m. ET on TWCS
Sunday, May 16: Philadelphia @ Atlanta Beat at 6 p.m. ET on FSC
