So...I had my first women's coaching summit of the year this weekend...and I completely lost my voice. Completely. I could barely squeak out a sound!
We had amazing weather, an amazing place to stay, and a fabulous group of women - who came together for the very first time.
One of my favorite sayings is, "Every breakdown is really a breakthrough." At the time I couldn't imagine how we would get through the day and cover any real content. And I learned again - for about the umpteenth time - that my voice is not the one that matters.
What's the lesson? The lesson for me was to get creative and get the group talking. It wasn't all about me! So, completely voiceless, I tapped into the philosophy I use when teaching yoga. I boiled it down to THE most important points to communicate - and only 2 or 3. I wrote those down on my big note pad. Then I had the group go through each point as they shared their experiences, ah-ha's, & examples.
They definitely shared MUCH more than if I had my voice and would have done a lot more talking. And I got a lot better at charades!![]()
When you were a kid, how many times did you get asked the question, "What are you going to be when you grow up?" And no matter what your answer, there was usually always an opinion or a judgment around whatever you said. People are always tossing around their personal judgments about our chosen career path from the time we are old enough to respond. As we get older, it doesn't stop. People still ask the same question. And other people define us by what we do - or don't do.
The book, Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg has been a popular best-seller. And although there are accurate statistics and some great takeaways in the book, I have talked with many women who have read it and hear only the "should's" and the "have to's" in terms of their careers.
It's time to let go of that kind of judgment and tune into your own inner voice. The only way to find your true peace and happiness - in your job and in your life - is to follow your own unique path and intuition.
How do we do that?
1. Slow down
off the un-controllables and schedule the other things in your calendar. Your brain will feel better.
