Sharapova vs Williams Photos

Last Saturday Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams started their 2010 tennis season playing a tennis exhibition match in Thailand. The Russian played much better and took advantage of Venus’ errors to score a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

Sharapova converted 75 percent of her break points, against just 13 percent by Williams, and she showed a very solid baseline play. They had trouble dealing with the heat but Williams particularly struggled to keep the ball in play.

Maria broke Venus three times in the opening set while in the second set Williams was wroken in the final game to lose the match.

“It’s good to be back. I’m glad to play against Venus in my first match of the year,” Sharapova said.

“I still remember when I first came here (in 2005). I was still young and had a great match with Venus,” she added.

Williams admitted she was a little off the pace after the offseason.

“Maria played so well. I was slow in my first match of the season. It’s good to be here hitting the ball.”

This tennis exhibition was part of Sharapova’s and Williams’ preparation for the Australian Open 2010 that begins in just 12 days.
