The magicJoke has now become an on-the-field thing, too.

And the second “eff you, magicJack” moment of the 2011 WPS season came courtesy of the Philadelphia Independence after the team’s 6-0 thrashing. Other than a couple stellar saves by Val Henderson and a near miss or two from Sarah Huffman, magicJack got worked. The crossbar denied Philadelphia from reaching double digits and mJ from getting a goal back, but it’s hard to say the score was misrepresentation. Dan Borislow’s team is known for its quirky three-back defense, but in some instances Brett Maron traveled so far off her line it looked she was playing as a center-back rather than a goalkeeper. And because a 6-0 score wasn’t absurd enough, Maron received a red card in the 90th minute.

The match produced the most lopsided score line in league history, as the 6-0 score line edges out FC Gold Pride’s 6-1 win against the Atlanta Beat last season. With the huge win, Philadelphia now eclipse mJ in the standings for second place. Fresh off her heroic stoppage time game-winning goal against the Flash last week, Danesha Adams helped herself to a brace while Sinead Farrelly and Vero each contributed two assists. Words just can’t do the Philadelphia Independence’s utter demolition of magicJack justice. Highlights here.

Atlanta and Boston played to a mind-numbingly dull 0-0 draw.

All the weekend’s goals and all the drama were reserved for the Philadelphia-magicJack game, apparently. Both Atlanta and Boston shared a point in a match that produced few chances and even fewer talking points. On the flipside, the Beat’s defense held tight throughout the match, and head coach James Galanis’ hailed his team’s back four in his post match comments. Reigning WPS Player of the Week Alyssa Naeher made two saves in the dying minutes of the game but the sweltering heat and stifling humidity had taken their toll on the match by then. Chris Henderson was there to witness the event (and that’s a relative term) below.

Stat of note: There have been three 0-0 draws of the season thus far and one has occurred in every weekend this month. All three have involved either the Beat, the Breakers, or both.

Sky Blue FC and the Atlanta Beat look to gain ground in the standings.

The season’s first midweek match occurs this Wednesday as Atlanta travels to New Jersey to face a improved Sky Blue FC side. The last time these two teams met on May 21, Sky Blue ran out 3-0 winners. Since then, Jim Gabarra’s club has yet to drop a point. Atlanta, meanwhile, will look to earn just their second win of the season. And who was the opponent in that winning effort? Sky Blue FC. The result on Wednesday has several implications: A win for the Beat could see James Galanis’ team go level with Sky Blue FC in fifth place while a win for the Jersey outfit would put them even on points with Boston in fourth.

Nice to be back, and will have something new later this evening.
