• Sky Blue FC defeated the Atlanta Beat 1-0 on Wednesday night. Casey Nogueira converted yet another ridiculous goal. This time the second-year pro scored from a corner kick — and off her right foot, no less. SBFC now move up to fourth place and are tied on points with the Boston Breakers.

• After the match, Atlanta Beat head coach James Galanis conceded his team had no chance of making the playoffs and made some candid comments about the Beat’s original intentions going into the season.

• *Note: While there’s definitely been rumors about the Beat’s decision to mail it in early on, why would Galanis publicly admit it now? That kind of self-defeating attitude surely can’t send a positive message to either the team’s players or its fans. Also wonder how players like Lori Chalupny, Cat Whitehill, and Carli Lloyd feel if that was the plan along…

• So can WPS capture any excitement generated from the World Cup? WPS is set to launch the See Extraordinary Heroes initiative which will occur after the tournament concludes. Here’s the official word:

In addition to delivering exciting world-class action on the field, festive elements such as fireworks, giveaways, celebrity appearances, and new interactive activities will enhance the fan and player experience at the celebratory matches.
