She's good.
The Western New York Flash have the regular season title in striking distance as the team won its critical game in hand against magicJack. The 2-1 victory vaults the Flash back to first place ahead of the Philadelphia Independence and are currently on 39 points. The WPS debutantes only need a win or a draw at home against a lowly Atlanta Beat side on Sunday to secure the right to host the 2011 WPS Championship.
The Independence are now three points off the pace and will have to defeat magicJack in Boca Raton and hope that the Beat can do something they’ve done just once this year and earn a win.
Wednesday’s match saw an explosion of goals in a span of just nine minutes. Marta bagged her second brace in just as many games while Sophie Schmidt scored the initial equalizer in her first goal of the season.
A capacity crowd of 4,011 fans turned out to watch magicJack play in the team’s penultimate home match. The game marks just the second time the club has lost at their home ground all season.
Marta continues to make a run at a third Michelle Akers Player of the Year Award honor. She’s currently earned just 4.2 percent of the total vote (Marta burnout maybe) while the frontrunner Vero leads the pack with a whopping 57 percent.
That may change once the regular season is over as Marta’s productivity has been flat-out amazing. It seems attendances haven’t been the only recipients of a World Cup bump as she has now scored nine goals (just one behind the league’s goal-leader Christine Sinclair), six of which have come in her last five games. She’s tallied either a goal or an assist in the six games in which she’s appeared since her first game back from the World Cup. She’s had a direct hand in eight of the 15 total goals the Flash have scored since then, too. And the Flash have certainly benefitted as the team has taken 16 points from a possible 18.
Perhaps most impressive of all, Marta looks primed to become the only player in league history to have appeared for every team that has earned the automatic berth in the WPS Championship game.
