The Chesapeake Charge concluded several weeks of road matches with a trip to the Midwest to take on FC Indiana (on Friday) and the Chicago Red Stars (on Sunday). They battled Indiana to a 1-1 draw but fell to first place Chicago, 5-0.
Friday’s match was a defensive struggle, with few chances for either side. FC Indiana scored in the 30th minute on a goal from Soline Bellvue, but the Charge’s Erica Suter headed in a goal in the 75th minute to knot the score.
The result can’t have been a satisfactory one for either side: after losing five straight games to the WPSL Elite’s professional teams, Indiana had to have been hoping for a win at home against an amateur side. Chesapeake, meanwhile, had to be looking for three points against the league’s eighth-place team.
On Sunday, the Charge faced the league’s only undefeated team and acquitted themselves well for the first 75 minutes. In 90-degree weather, Chesapeake required Red Stars goalkeeper Jamie Forbes to make multiple big saves early to keep a clean sheet.
Chicago got on the board in the 32nd minute when Michele Weissenhofer sent in a free kick from about 30 yards out that Lauren Fowlkes headed into net. Eight minutes later, Alyssa Mautz fed Lori Chalupny, who put in goal number two.
Red Stars head coach Rory Dames substituted liberally to start the second half, putting in four new players. The Charge held up against the fresh onslaught for the next 30 minutes but fell apart with 15 minutes to go and gave up three late goals. Fowlkes completed a hat trick with goals in the 77th and 80th minutes, both off feeds from Amanda Cinalli, and Zoey Goralski, at 17 the Red Stars’ youngest player, completed the scoring in the 85th minute off an Ashlee Elliott pass.
Five matches into their fourteen-match regular season the Arundel team is in sixth place in the league. The good news is that their next three games are at home, at Old Mill School in Millersville, MD. The bad news is that they’re in quick succession and all against professional teams: the Western New York Flash on Saturday, June 16, at 2 pm; the New York Fury on Sunday, June 17, at 4 pm; and the Chicago Red Stars on Friday, June 22, at 7 pm.
